Dr. William Hipp
William Hipp recently concluded a two-year term as
Interim Dean of the Conservatory of Music at the
University of the Pacific .  Prior to that he served as
Dean and Patricia L. Frost Professor of Music at the
University of Miami’s Phillip and Patricia Frost School of
Music from June of 1983 until May of 2007.  During his
tenure as Dean, the Frost School grew in enrollment,
selectivity, and national stature;  added a number of
strategically important graduate degree programs;
attracted numerous faculty with national/international
profiles; increased to twenty the number of outreach
programs serving the Southeast Florida community;
established international exchange programs at Perth
(Australia), Buckinghamshire (England) and Helsinki
(Finland); established a five-week summer program at
Salzburg (Austria); constructed two important new
facilities; and raised over one hundred million dollars.  
Hipp was founder and Executive Director of Festival
Miami, an annual five-week international music festival
established in 1984 that presents over twenty concerts
featuring international guest artists alongside University
of Miami artist faculty and major ensembles.

Hipp’s other previous positions as a music executive
have included Director of the School of Music at Illinois
Wesleyan University and Chairman of the Division of
Music at Southern Methodist University, where he also
served for a year as Acting Dean of the Meadows School
of the Arts.

He served the National Association of Schools of Music
(NASM) as a member of the Commission on
Accreditation (6 years), Treasurer (6 years), Vice
President (3 years), President (3 years), and was
awarded Honorary Membership by NASM in November
of 2006. He has served as a consultant or visiting
evaluator at over sixty-five institutions.  He was a
founding member and Past President of the Florida
Higher Education Arts Network, which presented him
with a Lifetime Achievement Award in May of 2005, and
is a Past President of the Texas Association of Music
Schools.  

Hipp is currently a board member of several national,
state, and local arts-related foundations and
organizations. He was conferred the title of Cavaliere by
the Republic of Italy, the Amicus Poloniae Award by the
Republic of Poland, and the Diploma de Honor by the
Organization of American States.  In January of 2002,
he was inducted into the Florida Music Educators
Association Hall of Fame.  In 2006, he was presented
with the “Inside Out” Award by the UM Alumni
Association, the Distinguished Service Award by the UM
Citizens Board, and the key to the city of Salzburg by its
mayor in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Frost
School’s summer program there.  March 18, 2007 was
declared “William Hipp Day” in proclamations issued by
Miami-Dade County, the City of Coral Gables, and the
Florida House of Representatives.

Hipp earned an AA degree at Del Mar College and  
Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of
Musical Arts degrees at The University of Texas at Austin’
s Butler School of Music, which in 2004 named him a
Distinguished Alumnus.
